Divorced Woman Sends Wedding Ring Into Orbit

While I don't usually like to write about divorce (being a wedding dj and all), I had to share this one particular story from Chris Matyszczyk at CNET.

Rebecca Gibbs wanted to make sure that her divorce was final.  Think Taylor Swift and "We are never, ever, EVER getting back together."  So, in order to make sure her ex-husband Stephen Page took the hint, she launched her wedding ring into orbit.  It helps that her new boyfriend's father is an actual rocket scientist.

Gibbs explained, "I just thought that was awesome and it was a really liberating experience for me, and while it was for me, it was also for him, to let him know it was completely over."

Sadly, the video of the launch itself is no longer available on YouTube, but the Gibbs-Page wedding video still is!!  No word on what made the happy couple grow apart.

Enjoy the entire story on CNET here.

"Morning After" Wedding Photos a New Trend!?

Sorry I haven't written anything for a while.  Things have been incredibly busy here at Skip Kelly Productions!  We've brought on a new DJ, Rhyme Jones who is now available for weddings and events.  He's pretty amazing.  He’s a musician and producer who comes from a musical family.  His uncle is in the band UB40, (“Red, Red Wine”)!  He trained with me personally and is the only other DJ I’ve ever felt comfortable hiring to be a part of my company.  I hired him because he's smart, talented and is a "creative type" which fits in well with me.

We've been getting out there with 3 bridal shows and a bridal fashion show all in one month!!  Our new ad is out in Jacksonville Magazine's "BRIDE" and we even had some commercials on the radio!  Needless to say, we've been busy, but...

Have you heard (or considered) this new trend, "Morning After" Wedding Photos!?  I literally just heard about it from "Good Afternoon America" and the Huffington Post.

Couples are inviting their photographer into the bridal suite the morning after their wedding for a "morning after" photo shoot.  The pictures tend to lean towards the steamy side, with the couple in various stages of undress or even the literally steamy with the couple in the shower!

Check out the clip from Good Afternoon America, or read the whole story from the Huffington Post.  I love the idea.  I think it's hot, sexy and really showcases the raw love story of a new marriage.  My wife thinks it's dirty and says she, "doesn't want to have to look at half-naked pictures of her friends on Facebook."  What do you think!?  "Morning After" Wedding Photos, hot trend or tacky twosome?

Skip Kelly Productions featured on The Jacksonville Bride!

Hey!  Skip Kelly Productions was featured (twice) on The Jacksonville Bride this month!

First, you'll want to catch our interview video!  Blog editor Megan Martin sat down in the Skip Kelly Productions studio to discuss what brides should know about meeting and picking a DJ for their wedding.  Even though I'm a total doofus on camera, it's still full of good information!

Second, Kelly & Jason Frotten's wedding from 4/7/12 got featured on the blog as well!  West House Photography took some AMAZING photos that you have to see.  Great work by Makeup by Paulina Perez too.  Of course, Skip Kelly Productions was the DJ, but it's really difficult to take a photo of good music.  ;)

Enjoy!

How to Know If You're Having the Same Wedding as Everyone Else on Pinterest

I completely lifted this entire post from author Natalie Linden off thehairpin.com.  I'm sorry for just copying and pasting the whole thing, but I thought it was too funny not to share.

How to Know If You're Having the Same Wedding as Everyone Else on Pinterest
By Natalie Linden - April 17, 2012

1. Do you find yourself using words like “country,” “DIY,” and “upcycling” when describing your concept?

2. Are you scouting “backyard” locations?

3. Are there Mason jars involved?

4. Will your bridesmaids be wearing cowgirl boots? Feathers? How about the groomsmen — bowties? Suspenders?

5. Are you thinking of succulents, or perhaps air plants, to add sass to your bouquet?
6. Is your veil attached to a headband?

7. Does this very long wooden table look familiar to you?

8. Are you pinning anything cute to wood piles or tree trunks?

9. Will the guests be sitting on natural materials such as wood planks, upside-down terra cotta pots, or hay bales covered in raw linen?

10. Do arbors figure prominently in your lighting design?

If you answered yes to five or more questions, congratulations! You have great taste, and your nuptials are sure to be awesome.

Wedding Registry Alternatives: 6 Online Registry Options

If you're like me, you're a big fan of shopping online.  I like flipping through pics and reading other people's reviews, then having my well-researched product shipped to my door.  No fuss, no hunting for parking at the mall, no high-cost gas for the car.  Well now, it appears there are also some decent online options for your wedding registry!

Instead of heading over to (insert your favorite store here) and spending the entire afternoon scanning everything you can find, why not just use some of these online alternatives?  The Huffington Post has put together a list of 6 options you can investigate and my favorite would have to be Honeyfund.  It's a website where your wedding guests can contribute to the honeymoon of your dreams!!  Fiji a little too expensive for you?  No problem!!

The list is worth looking at if you're tired of the same-old gift registries or just a little tech-savvy and like the idea of handing everything online.  Full article here.

The Return of the DJ

Read a great article on Gizmodo.com the other day that I've been meaning to share.  Apparently statistics show that people are gravitating more towards apps and services that choose music for them as opposed to creating their own playlists and listening to them.

When digital music became the norm and everyone owned an iPod or similar device, we all became our own DJs.  However, after the novelty of full control began to wear off, music fans were strangely unsatisfied.
"It quickly became clear that while this level of control was great some of the time, there was still something nice about having someone (or something) else pick your music. Basically, we needed a way to recapture that heady feeling of being surprised by an old favorite, or enjoying an artist we'd never heard of before."
Services like Pandora, iTunes Radio and Spotify have started to become the go-to places to listen to music, even more so than our own music collections!
"The shuffle feature recaptured some of those feelings: Dump an iPod or a playlist into a pot, draw songs at random, and hope for the best. Today, we have better ways to hand over the reigns than just counting on dumb luck. The second digital music revolution lets music fans decide with precision how we'd like our music to be chosen - even if we aren't the ones doing the choosing."
Naturally, as a DJ I love the trend that people prefer to have music chosen for them than to just rely on a playlist of their own creation.  I just find it fascinating that it's actually a fact!  People like to exert some amount of control over what they listen to, but they prefer not to have complete control.
"A decade after the iPod promised that we could master our musical domains for the rest of time, music fans are rediscovering the merits of a good DJ, human or otherwise."
Check out the full article here, along with links to some of the best music services available on the web.  If you're not a fan of Pandora or Spotify yet, you should definitely check them out!

The Dog Ate My Wedding Ring!

I hate to laugh, but this is a pretty funny story.  A couple in New Mexico had some, er...  trouble getting their wedding ring back from their basset hound!  You've heard the line about the dog eating your homework, but this one takes it to a whole new level.  You can watch the video of the news report and hear the story first hand here.

"Rachelle Atkinson has a habit of leaving her wedding ring on her night stand and in the morning, she puts it back on - that was until a few weeks ago.
"I went to go put it on and it was nowhere to be found," she said.
Rachelle and her husband Scott searched everywhere but eventually started to suspect a thief, their 10-month old basset hound, Coraline."
The ring never "came out" on its own, so eventually the couple had to bring their dog to the vet.  Everything turned out fine in the end though.  The vet said that basset hounds often eat rocks for various reasons, which means that Coraline has VERY expensive taste!

7 Tips for Planning a Wedding with Pinterest

So it seems like all the ladies (and plenty of guys) are on Pinterest these days.  It's the new hotness.  Aside from great recipes, dream houses and crafty decorating tricks, it's also a great way to plan your wedding!  Mashable tech writer Samantha Murphy came up with a quick 7 step checklist for any bride-to-be that also has a Pinterest account.

The two-year-old social bookmarking site — which allows users to collect and share things they like on the Internet — is becoming a hotbed for the wedding industry. Not only are Pinterest users adding images to their virtual pinboards for inspiration to help plan their big day, but some are collecting ideas for the future and aren’t even engaged.
Either way, Pinterest is an easy way to make planning a wedding more manageable. It’s like ripping the pages out of wedding magazines and taping them to your bulletin board — but digitally. Even better, each picture is typically linked to a site where you can buy the styles you want, learn DIY crafting tips and become informed about the latest trends. Friends and other Pinterest followers can also leave comments and feedback to make the whole planning process more interactive.
Check out the tips on Mashable here

Swedish woman finds wedding ring after 16 years, on a carrot!

For those of you who have been told, "Money doesn't grow on trees," you can rest assured that statement is still correct.  However, it appears that money in Sweden DOES grow on carrots!

A woman in Sweden lost her wedding ring 16 years ago and recently found it around a carrot growing in her garden!  A quick little story from Yahoo! News that will bring a chuckle to your day.

Google is a Pro Wedding Planner!?

I came across a great article in the Naperville Sun about using Google to help plan and organize your wedding! Even as a massive geek, I never would have thought of this, but there are some amazing ideas in the article.
"Google Docs, the search company’s free, easy-to-use online document software. With templates for the spreadsheet-challenged and a slew of pretty Web tools, the service is like the perfect bridesmaid. She’s calm, collected and full of good ideas but not overly pushy, letting you steer the ship. She’s there when you need her."
One of the best suggestions was using Google Docs to help you collect everyone's mailing address.  Google has a tool that will scan your address book and automatically sends out an email with a form for them to fill out.  Once they do, it's all saved into a spreadsheet that you can use to print mailing labels or give to your invitation company to print directly!
"The spreadsheet, once completed, proved invaluable. It’s simple to share documents through Google by entering recipients’ email addresses, or to restrict them so only you can see them. I shared the list with my fiance and with the people who were planning our bachelor and bachelorette parties. Over time, we added columns such as “invitation sent” and “gift description.”
The couple even used Google Docs to write and collaborate on their vows!
"Google lets you share documents with people as “can view” and “can edit.” After the wedding, I shared the final document with my mom, so she could keep it for posterity — but not edit it, lest she insert some new vows she’d like my husband to keep. "
It's definitely worth checking out even if you're not the most tech-savvy bride.  You might be surprised at how much time and frustration it could save you!  Check out the original article here.
